Black Point

Hood Canal Map

Black Point is a 710-acre peninsula that juts into Hood Canal from the west, between the Duckabush and Dosewallips Rivers, near the town of Brinnon.

A largely unused campground occupies a good portion of the land on Black Point. Land on Black Point includes several unique, large, deep depressions called kettles.

The kettles are thought to be formed by glaciers as they retreated.  Some kettles are wetlands.  Because of the kettles, there is relatively little land for building.

The long shoreline of Black Point makes planning particularly important because the area has significant influence on the Hood Canal. The area aquifer is thought to be segregated from water coming off of the area mountains and therefore may be vulnerable to salt water incursion if misused.  Area wells may have salt water intrusion.

Property is privately owned, as well as owned by the State Department of Fish and Wildlife.  This is the area where the Statesman Corporation plans to build the resort and marina.  Statesman appears to have bought most of the privately owned property through a subsidiary company.

The Skokomish and Port Gamble S'Klallam tribes have cultural and religious ties to Black Point.  Because of the pattern of land ownership, it has been difficult for them to use the area for tribal activities.
